Glacier Portraits #1 is a hand-woven textile work in wool and cotton yarn, dyed with mud gathered directly from the glacier Magdalenafjorden located in the Arctic Sea on the Island of Svalbard. The pigment was collected during an Arctic Circle residency — a remote site reached on foot, the mud carried back across the ice and worked into the fiber.
Please note: the glacier mud used to dye this work has not been treated with a sealant or fixative. Over time, small amounts of sediment may loosen and fall. This is part of the nature of the material — a reflection of the glacier itself, which is also in a state of slow change.
